SSA for anti-dumping duty review of 250 shrimp exporters
KOCHI, INDIA - Southern Shrimp Alliance (SSA), the US petitioners for the anti-dumping duty on shrimp, have once again filed applications for review of over 250 Indian shrimp exporters when there are just 74 firms that have exported to the US during the second review period.Exporters felt that SSA was making a mockery of the whole exercise and it remained to be seen whether the US department of commerce (DoC) would see through the gameplan.
About 74 firms have exported to the US during the review period from February 1, 2006 to January 31, 2007 accounting for exports worth $251.6 million. Of these, 44 firms have voluntarily sought review account for around 80% of the exports, since they had been genuinely hurt by the duty and the customs bonds.
This being the reality, the SSA’s move to seek review of over 250 firms clearly showed its lack of knowledge of the situation and to assert its position, merely sought review at random. Of the firms for which the SSA had sought review, around 10 were de-registered firms out of business and over 170 were firms that were not exporting to the US.
