Russian officials inspect domestic seafood facilities

The officials will continue inspections through March 28 as part of a plan to examine hygiene standards in several countries processing seafood for export to Russia.

The Russian officials will inspect the monitoring of fishing equipment and facilities and the supervision of food safety at processing plants and cold storage facilities, as well as materials suppliers.

On Monday, the Russian inspectors met leaders from the Ministry of Fisheries and held a working session with officials from the ministry’s National Fisheries Quality Assurance and Veterinary Directorate (Nafiqaved).

In 2006, Viet Nam exported 58,705 tonnes of seafood to Russia worth US$126.3 million, an increases of 347 per cent in volume and 275 per cent in value over 2005 figures.

According to the Viet Nam Association of Seafood Exporters and Processors (VASEP), all seafood shipments bound for Russia have been required to bear certificates of hygiene and food safety in accordance with Russian requirements as of January 15, 2007. These products were also required to come from processing establishments meeting food safety standards.
