Burma Hopes to Export 500 Tons of Shrimp to Bangladesh
BANGLADESH - Shrimp exporters from Arakan State are keen to export more shrimp from the Maungdaw wholesale shrimp center to Bangladesh during the 2007-08 fiscal year than they have in previous years, according to a report of a business source in Maungdaw. |
The shrimp exporters are looking to export 500 tons of shrimp to Bangladesh this fiscal year, with the target for total shrimp exports a little higher than previously.
A businessman said that in the fiscal year of 2005-06, 400 tons of shrimp from the Maungdaw wholesale center were exported to Bangladesh, while in the 2004-05 fiscal year, only 230 tons of shrimp were exported by the neighboring country.
However, shrimp businessmen are currently waiting on legal permission this year from the high army authority to export shrimp to Bangladesh from the Maungdaw wholesale center.
According to a business source, businessmen from Maungdaw have been exporting shrimp to Bangladesh illegally, as the army authorities have not yet issued the permission for shrimp exporting.
