Businesses under strain following Northland floods

NEW ZEALAND - A Russell oyster farmer says extreme flooding in Northland could force the local oyster industry to close down for up to 56 days.

Aquaculturist Clive Harwood says it is a statutory requirement to shut down if there is a major sewerage spill.

He is expecting a long closure during the current peak selling season, and for export sales to be affected.

Mr Harwood says it means zero income and it couldn't come at at worse time..

And milk is also being wasted, as tankers struggle to get through flood-damaged Northland roads
