Efforts to breed disease-free shrimp in lab

INDIA - With the country losing heavily in shrimp exports due to the ‘white spot’ disease, the Union Ministry of Commerce is making efforts to breed disease-free mother shrimp in a laboratory, set up exclusively in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The disease-free mother stock will provide an ultimate solution faced by the shrimp breeders.

Union Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh told this website's newspaper that the disease-free mother shrimp will be ready for supply by 2009. All shrimp hatcheries in the country will be supplied the disease- free shrimp seed and the present disease-ridden shrimp seed will be destroyed.

The laboratory for breeding the mother shrim has been set up in the A&N Islands at a cost of Rs 18 crore. Andhra Pradesh alone is losing Rs 2,500 crore in the shrimp export market due to the ‘white spot’ disease.

The Indian shrimp industry could not access the disease-free mother shrimp available in the West.
