Farmed salmon making their way to Newfoundland's south coast
About 1.5 million of the young salmon will arrive this summer at Cooke Aquaculture Inc. sites near Belleoram, Fortune Bay.
It's the second batch of fish Cooke has shipped in for its south coast fish farm since last spring.
Using the MV Martin Saele, a Norwegian fish carrier that usually plies European waters, is a first for Cooke Aquaculture. Last year, the company transported young salmon, known as smolts, to the south coast using modified fishing boats.
"It was a long journey," said Nell Halse, Cooke Aquaculture's communications director.
This year, the company decided to try something different - partly because the smolts' voyage will occur during the fishing season, and partly because the Martin Saele is faster.
"We have to move a lot of fish in a fairly small space of time from New Brunswick to Newfoundland," said Halse.
Cooke is transporting the salmon between mid-May and the end of June.
