Organic salmon quality control launched

IRELAND - Bord Iascaigh Mhara yesterday launched the first nationally recognised Irish organic salmon standard at an Irish Farmers Association special conference at Enfield, Co Meath.

Ireland, the world’s largest producer of organic salmon, has a volume of about 8,000 tonnes per annum, valued at €38 million.

The majority is currently exported to Britain (37%) and Germany (35%).

BIM Aquaculture development manager Donal Maguire launched the certification standard saying it is a welcome step towards meeting the recommendations in the recently published review of Ireland’s seafood industry.

The report highlighted the need for Irish seafood products to differentiate themselves, building on Ireland’s clean, green image and to supply into premium, niche markets.

Mr Maguire said the standard builds on the existing Irish Quality Salmon standard, providing an excellent means of further differentiating Irish products on the global market.
