MP working on a bill to ban all Northwest fish farms

CANADA - MP Nathan Cullen says that he is taking it upon himself to try and put an end to the controversial fish farm debate throughout the Northwest.

“I am, right now, working on a bill that would see a ban on all open-net fish farms in the Northwest region that I will be presenting in a couple of weeks to the communities and the House of Commons,” he explained during an April 5 media call.

“We are talking to the legislative bill drafters in Ottawa about how to drive an initial wedge into the issue and declare, whether it’s the Skeena watershed or whatever area it is that is being looked at, fish farm free…We want to make it very specific and difficult for the government to ignore.”

The issue of fish farming was the focus of a special legislative committee formed by the provincial government that toured a number of communities throughout B.C. last year. According to Cullen, the response to the committee from residents in the riding is one of the reasons that he is bringing the issue to the Federal Government.
