Giant fresh water prawn opens opportunities in aquaculture industry
PHILIPPINES - The giant freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium Rosenbergii) locally known as "Ulang," the most promising aquaculture specie in the country at present, is being produced in the Bicol region.Realizing its income potential and livelihood opportunities, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Bicol regional office and the National Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Council (NFARMC) equipped the 42 fisherfolk leaders nationwide with skills on the culture of said species through a five-day National Trainers Training before its full implementation two years ago.
The training set forth new technology trends in rearing Ulang and in identifying measures on how to tap the local market including its export potential.
"Ulang" gained its momentum due to innovative measures undertaken by the National Freshwater Fisheries Training Center headed by Dr. Melchor Tayamen.
The survival rate of ulang has increased from 20 percent to 85 percent, thus opening opportunities for fisherfolk and interested entrepreneurs to confidently engage in the business.
