Nigerian Aquaculture Industry Requires Quality Measures

NIGERIA - A glut is appearing in Nigera in as the fisheries sub-sector begins to experience growth in production, writes Olukayode Oyeleye, The Guardian.

This was disclosed last Thursday at the training organised by the Fisheries Society of Nigeria (FISON) in Lagos.

According to the director of fisheries, federal department of fisheries, Mr. Patrick Taggert, "it is unfortunate that glut is setting in" in fish farming business now. "But, despite that, it is also unfortunate that most producers want to occupy the various roles" involved in production.

These roles, which Mr. Taggert named as fingerling production, growers production and feedmilling, among others, are supposed to be handled by separate investors rather than by each.

Mr. Taggert attributed the prevailing situation to possibilities arising from the lack of regulation in the industry. He said the industry is not yet mature, or that the investors are simply greedy. Anyone attempting to perform all the roles will not perform any of them effectively, he added, emphasising that he was not against small producers, but that all producers, small or large scale, must conform to standards. "Their small size is not an excuse for falling short of standards" he said.
