Shrimp Trade Prospects Not Bright

IRAN - The new head of the State Veterinary Organization has warned that the country may be unable to export shrimp in the year to March 2009.

More than 976 tons of shrimp bound for foreign states were sent back in the year to March 2007.

Addressing a press conference, Mojtaba Norouzi, who has been in the post for two months, said the future for shrimp export looked dim.

Elaborating his remarks, he said: "The country cannot export the marine crustaceans in the forthcoming year because the government has to spend a huge amount on protecting producers. If money had been spent earlier on upgrading the quality of shrimp, we could now have reaped its benefits."

According to Mr Norouzi , more than 976 tons of shrimp bound for foreign markets were sent back in the year to March 2007.

"As a result, the country was excluded from shrimp exporting states." Norouzi, the former head of Ilam Agricultural Jihad Department, contended that regaining the former status in the global shrimp market would be a difficult but not impossible.
