Newfoundland scoops $Multi-Million investment

Millions of dollars were invested in the region, including an announcement  of $1.2 million toward the a new Aquatic Veterinary Diagnostic Facility in St. Alban's. The new $ multi-million facility, which will be built to support the aquaculture industry, is expected to cost $4.3 million in total. It is scheduled for completion in 2008.

"Clearly, investment in the development and diversification of our fishery business is a priority for government," said Tom Rideout, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture. "To ensure this continues to support the development of rural Newfoundland and Labrador, our government remains committed to making strategic investments in fisheries and aquaculture."

Cyr Coutourier, President of the Newfoundland Aquaculture Industry Association said it was a reasonable budget and everyone involved in the industry was very pleased about increased government support.

"Generally speaking, it's always positive when we have aquaculture mentioned and supported in a provincial budget. This reaffirms this particular governments commitment to support aquaculture following on from some of the recommendations the industry has been making for several years."
