Shrimp Farmers in Quandary
IRAN - Managing director of Aquatic Breeders Union has called for the implementation of a directive by agricultural jihad minister urging Rural Cooperative Organisations to purchase shrimps directly from farmers. More than 976 tons of shrimp bound for foreign states were sent back in the year to March 2007. |
Arsalan Qasemi complained that in spite of the minister’s directive to buy shrimps produced during the 2006-7 fiscal year as well as in the year to March 2008, the organisation, Rural Cooperatives Union and Union of Exporters of Aquatic Products have failed to meet their obligations.
Qasemi was quoted as saying that given the problems facing exports the probelms have remained unresolved and t organisation had failed to pay the farmers.
A number of shrimp breeders gathered in front of the Majlis and Agricultural Jihad Ministry calling for implementation of the order.
New head of State Veterinary Organisation Mojtaba Norouzi warned last week that the country may be unable to export shrimp in the year to March 2009.
Norouzi, said the future for shrimp export did not look promising. He said that the country could not export marine crustaceans in the next year and so the government would have to spend huge sums on protecting producers.
