Print This Page Karelians fear WTO membership
RUSSIA - Russia’s entry into the World Trade Organisation will have negative effects on a number of industries in the Republic of Karelia, says its regional Economics Department.

Head of Economics, Yevgenia Trofimova, says the regional fish industry will be seriously affected if Russia becomes a WTO member.
She says membership will cause a significant drop in import taxes on fish products. She also believes that the region is likely to suffer the same economic disadvantages on equipment for its vitally important paper and pulp industry. She says that overall the competition will become far tougher and its not what the region needs.
