Company recalling fish feed is testing B.C. batches
10 May 2007CANADA - It's unlikely that British Columbia's salmon farms have used contaminated fish feed recalled by Vancouver-based manufacturer, Skretting Canada
Spokesman Dr. Chris Beattie said that the company is currently conducting further tests on other batches of feed before it will confirm that BC farmed salmon have not received any contaminated feed with melamine.
The recalled Skretting feed was intended for use at hatcheries as an initial food source for very young trout and salmon. And, according to the US Food and Drug Administration, all of its customers were based in the United States.
Skretting has recalled all of the suspected contaminated feed. It is now contacting all of its customers as both the company and government officials in Canada and the US want to trace every possible outlet for this feed.
As an additional precaution, Beattie said the company is testing other feed batches.
"None of the batch that tested positive by the FDA went to BC salmon farms, but we are doing further testing, which we are awaiting the results from," Beattie said.
