Print This Page Proposal to curb killer disease
MICHIGAN - A proposed fish-disease control order has been presented to the Natural Resources Commission. The DNR biologists who made the presentation are trying to slow the spread of a killer fish disease, viral hemorrhagic septicemia. They also want to decrease the likelihood of new diseases being introduced.The plan by the Department of Natural Resources fisheries division would divide the state's waters into three zones or categories. The immediate aim would be to stop or slow the spread of viral hemorrhagic septicemia, which caused large fish kills in the past two years.
Infected zones are places where pathogens have been found and would include North America's Great Lakes region, including lakes Erie, Huron and their tributaries.
Surveillance zones are places where the disease is expected to arrive soon, and would include Lake Michigan and its tributaries. Pathogen-free areas would be Lake Superior and its rivers.
