AquaChile acquires Robinson Crusoe

CHILE - AquaChile, the largest Chilean-owned farmed fish company in the world, has acquired the remainling 40 percent stake in the salmon company Robinson Crusoe.

The purchase gives AquaChile, which bought a 60 percent share of Robinson Crusoe in 2005, full control of its rival company. It will now be called Salmones Mauliín and will continue to operate as a separate entity.

AquaChile is headed by Víctor Hugo Puchi. It is  the world’s third biggest salmon company and boasts annual earnings of some US$600 million and employs more than 5,000 people in Chile, Costa Rica and the United States.

Chile’s rapidly growing farmed salmon and trout industry has boomed in recent years. Last year the industry earned some US$2.2 billion dollars, a staggering figure considering that in 1991 the country’s fish farms generated just US$159 million.
