Marine exports up 12 pc in 2006-07

INDIA - India's exports of marine products rose 12 per cent to 1.85 billion US dollars in 2006-07 against 1.64 billion dollars in the previous year, with China emerging as a major destination.

Union Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh said that the achievement was a 'turnaround' for marine products exports.

China had emerged as a major importer from India accounting for 14 per cent of exports. European Union accounted for 34 per cent, while US and Japan's share was 16 per cent each.

With frozen shrimp accounting for 55 per cent of value in the export basket, it was necessary to ensure that disease free shrimps are exported, he said.

To ensure pathogen-free brood stock of shrimp, the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) has identified a bio secure zone in the Andaman Islands where disease free shrimp can be cultivated. By 2009, the stock would be available in the hatcheries in the country.
