Experts worry over fish farming’s adverse impacts
VIET NAM - Delegates at a roundtable meeting in Can Tho last week urged the Ministry of Fisheries and environment agencies to take prompt action for protecting the environment as fish farming is beginning to pose serious problems. |

The roundtable talk, titled “Fisheries and Environment”, was organised by Thoi Bao Kinh Te Saigon of Saigon Times Group and Can Tho Radio and Television. Several experts attending said the country still lacked a clear vision on environment protection in fish farming.
Pham Dinh Don, deputy head of the Environment Protection Department of the Southwest Region, said zoning master plans prepared by the Fisheries Ministry so far had defined only development targets and ignored environmental issues.
Such master plans “only give general figures such as 650,000 hectares under salt water farming until 2010, and 350,000 hectares under brackish water fish farming, while farming methods are not given,” said Don, adding several farming methods are hazardous to the environment.
