Print This Page The Battle Over Fish Farms
TURKEY - The verdict by the State Council a fortnight ago overturning the decree banning fish farms in certain areas has led to further disputes between fish farm owners and environmentalists who claim that fish farms are polluting the sea.The dilemma arose when fish farmers objected to the initial ruling that led the Council of State to issue another verdict favoring them.
While the fish farmers enjoy their victory, the environmentalists are prepared to counterattack. The Greens of Turkey, in their convention last Saturday, put the issue on their agenda.
The law, which stipulated that fish farms could not be established in protected natural and archaeological sites and in places less than 1.1 kilometers from the shore, shallower than 30 meters and where the momentum flow was less than one meter per second, was scrapped. Having applied to the State Council to scrap the law, fish farm owners hailed the new decision that was made public last Wednesday.
