Take up fish production to fight crisis, farmers told

INDIA - Farmers should not depend wholly on agriculture. They should take up fish production, rearing of sheep and goats and allied activities. It will help pull them out of the present crisis, Karnataka Veterinary, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Sciences University Vice-Chancellor R.N. Srinivas Gowda has said.

He was speaking after inaugurating an “Inland fisheries field day” in the village tank bed at Vilaspur in Bhalki taluk on Wednesday.

Farmers are facing problems such as poor production, fall in prices and lack of access to markets. Even cultivation of cash crops such as sugarcane had not solved their problems.

Many sugarcane farmers had committed suicide since they could not find market for the produce.

The solution to their problems lay in integrated farming where they would take up cultivation of crops along with animal husbandry and fisheries practices, he said.

Fish production needed only one fourth the water required for sugarcane cultivation. It had not suffered because of variations in the market in recent years. The demand for it was growing and the market for fish were not concentrated in few cities, Dr. Gowda said.
