Temburong co-op invests future in aquaculture
BRUNEI - The country's aquaculture industry is set to receive a further boost with the launch of a co-operative specialising in shrimp and tropical fish production. The cooperative, known as Koperasi Bersatu Ternakan Udang and Ikan Tropika Berhad of Temburong, is a milestone initiative of LiveWire Brunei, and is part of the social investment agenda of Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd (BSP).
The aquaculture farm, the centerpiece of the co-operative, is located on a 200-acre land in Kg Selangan, and comprises 160 members.
This project was initiated following the interest shown by the Kampung Selangan community members in the aquaculture industry. Through the venture, the cooperative hopes to encourage the involvement and foster the entrepreneurial spirit of the residents, particularly among the village youths.
Its establishment is also aimed at catering to the needs of the booming local market and, in the long run, to export the farmed products. Aquaculture has been earmarked as a potential industry generator in Brunei.
