Nation aims to catch up with region in aquaculture

Ha Noi – Viet Nam aims to bring biotechnology used in its aquaculture sector on a par with that of developed countries in Southeast Asia.

The target was set in a recently-approved project to develop and apply biotechnology in aquaculture through 2020.

Under the project, the country will set up a network of medium-and small-sized aquaculture biotechnology enterprises to serve production, disease prevention and processing as well as ensure high-quality aquatic varieties for farmers.

The scheme said the application of biotechnology is expected to boost aquatic output by 30 percent.

To reach these targets, the project has put forth a series of solutions such as incentives for more application of scientific research into production, encouraging technology transfer activities and creating a favourable investment environment.

The aquaculture sector should also look for investment from all possible sources to develop infrastructure and human resources for biotechnology, research and boost international cooperation in the area.
