Scottish Salmon scaling up its charm offensive

UK - All newly-elected Scottish MSPs and local authority councillors have been placed on a guest list for salmon farm visits this summer, as part of the latest charm offensive launched by the industry's umbrella body, Scottish Salmon.

The move follows a series of seminars rolled out in conjunction with the Scottish Council for Development and Industry and aimed exclusively at the financial services industry and private investors.

The object of the new charm offensive is to convince Scottish politicians and business of something consumers worldwide already appreciate - Scottish salmon is a premium product.

Sid Patten, chief executive of Scottish Salmon, the producers' organisation, said: "We don't have to convince our customers. Over a million fresh farmed salmon meals are eaten every day, and over a million smoked salmon meals are eaten every week in the UK alone.

"The Scottish salmon farming industry exported more than 12 million fish in 2006, to over 60 countries. And nearly half a billion Scottish farmed salmon meals were enjoyed worldwide in 2006.
