AUSTRALIA - UP to 1000 new jobs will be created locally with the opening of a new national seafood research centre in Adelaide. The $137 million Australian Seafood Co-operative Research Centre will be based at Science Park Adelaide in Bedford Park.
The centre is the second largest in Australia and aims to double the value of the nation's $2.1 billion seafood industry within 10 years.
Fisheries Minister Rory McEwen said the centre would deliver $700 million more into SA's seafood industry over seven years.
Science Minister Paul Caica said it was a coup for SA and jobs would be created in areas ranging from seafood production and processing to distribution and marketing.
"The centre will support the Australian seafood industry to keep up with escalating demand through new methods of fish farming, value adding to wild-catch fish, improving the quality of seafood products and consumer demands," Mr Caica said.
