THE PHILIPPINES - The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) plans to invest P20 million in developing four mariculture parks this year to boost the fisheries sector, BFAR Director Malcolm Sarmiento Jr. said. The bureau originally planned to put up 16 mariculture parks this year to add to the existing 25, but it has scaled down its target with a change in strategy to attracting investors to operate in the parks instead of building more parks, Sarmiento said.
A mariculture park, like an industrial estate, has different areas dedicated to specific fisheries projects, such as raising fish in cages.
