Aquaculture for all

Fisheries grows

FIJI - There is still potential for the fisheries industry to be developed further even though exports stand at around $400million, says Malakai Tuiloa, the principal fisheries officer with the Ministry of Fisheries and Forests.

He said that if planned well, the fisheries sector could generate millions more for the country as it was a foundation for economic growth and development.

"The fisheries sector is one of the economic natural resource base of the country. If we look at the plans and the strategies carefully and plan out ways to effectively use the resources, than we can definitely generate millions and millions of dollars into our country," Mr Tuiloa said.

He said records showed the fisheries sector was not only worth millions of dollars but there was still room for capture (catching fish from the sea) and aquaculture fisheries.

"From our record the fisheries sector is right now worth about $400million. But that is contradictory to the Bureau of Statistics figures as this figure goes through Reserve Bank," Mr Tuiloa said.
