Sh180m to fund fish landing beaches

KENYA - The Government will construct ten new fish landing beaches along the shores of Lake Victoria at a cost of Sh180 million.

Livestock and Fisheries minister, Mr Joseph Munyao, said the beaches will be established to boost the industry along the shores of lake Victoria. Munyao said eight other beaches will be given a facelift.

The new sites include Wichlum, Port Victoria, Ogal and Nyandiwa, which will be implemented under a new plan for Lake Victoria region.

"This project aims at improving fisheries infrastructure including water supply, sanitation and other amenities that would guarantee an improved quality of life for the fisheries communities," said the minister.

He said the Government has already received an approval from the European Union to tender for consultancy services to undertake the design and supervisory works of the proposed sites.

The Government has also complied with the EU’s suggestions of placing fish and fisheries products in the market for harmonisation in exporting fish without restrictions.
