Aquaculture can fight poverty
INDIA - Focusing on the potential of aquaculture to transform the socio-economic condition of under-developed regions, the city-based Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA) has kicked-off a workshop for project directors and other associates of Western Orissa Rural Livelihood Project (WORLP).The workshop titled ‘portable hatchery for better carp seed production’ aims at capacity building of the officials in operation and management of fibre-glass reinforced plastic (FRP) hatchery.
More than 100 delegates from Balangir, Nuapada and Kalahandi are attending the programme, which would conclude on Saturday.
The invention of FRP hatchery has spelt boom for the aquaculture sector. Among its several benefits, it can be transported, installed and operated in remote places to ensure easy and timely availability of seeds, thereby helping fishermen in many ways.
During last year CIFA had installed this hatchery in 16 different places. It can also be used as a tool for bio-diversity conservation. Inaugurating the workshop, director of Orissa Watershed Development Mission (OWDM) G B Reddy said, the aquaculture sector can play a crucial role in eliminating poverty and hunger.
He said, the portable carp hatchery developed by CIFA has proved effective in providing quality seed to the farmers. CIFA director N Sarangi, on the other hand, underlined on the availability of fish seeds of desired size, quantity and at desired time for aquaculture development.
