Print This Page Kenya Earns Sh4.9bn From Fish Exports
KENYA - Kenya earned Sh4.9 billion from the export of fish and its products last year. This was a drop from the previous Sh5.1 billion raised in 2005 from the foreign exchange earnings.
The Fisheries Department said the country produced 159,776 tonnes of fish last year, a 7 per cent rise from the 145,849 tonnes recorded in 2005.
It said the creation of the Beach Management Units (BMUs) around Lake Victoria had greatly improved community participation and use of fisheries resources. The units also improved the compliance to fishing regulations by the stakeholders, and reduced conflict among them.
The department's annual report noted that eleven patrol boats had been purchased at a cost of Sh90 million for improved monitoring and surveillance of fishing activities.
