Stiff Australian norms to hit prawn exporters
INDIA - India will be in a tight spot as Australia has ushered in stringent norms on importing raw prawns. Many marine products exporters will be practically evicted from the Australian market as adhering to the recently announced quality measures will be difficult.In a detailed letter to Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), Robyan Martin, General Manager, Animal Biosecurity of Australia, said that the government of Australia had announced revised interim measures (RIM) for the import of prawns and prawn products. This was based on the Biosecurity Australia Policy Memorandum (BAPM) and will be in place by the end of the current month.
According to RIM, the prawns to be exported to Australia should be sourced from a country or zone which is recognized by that country. Moreover, the uncooked prawns should be free from viruses such as White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV), Infectious Hypodermal and Haematopoietic Necrosis Virus (IHHNV), Yellow Head Virus (YHV) and Taura Syndrome Virus (TSV). The head and shell of the prawns exported, should have removed. The letter also asked MPEDA to provide a detailed submission regarding the adherence to RIM and information regarding the sources of prawns exported to Australia.
