Print This Page NIS 100m fish sales expected as consumption doubles
ISRAEL - Israelis consume an average of 800 grams of fish per month, 10 kilograms per year. However, fish consumption will more than double in September to 1.7kg, during Rosh Hashana (Jewish New Year’s) and the holidays, reports the Ministry of Agriculture. The ministry says that Israeli’s consumption of fish per capita is considerably less than the 10-20 kg. per capita in other Mediterranean countries, and the 60 kg. per capita consumed in Japan. Americans eat six to seven kg of fish per capita per year.
The Ministry of Agriculture estimates that fish sales will total NIS 100 million ahead of the holidays. Prices will be the same as during the rest of the year: carp will sell for NIS 20-23 per kg., St. Peter’s Fish will sell for NIS 28-30 per kg., and sea bream will sell for NIS 35-40 per kg.
