Fishery researchers improve clownfish cultivation

TAIWAN - A government-operated fishery research institute has successfully improved cultivation techniques for clownfish. It is now mulling over the transfer of the related technology to local aquaculture companies to boost Taiwan's share in the global aquarium fish market.

According to the Taitung-based Eastern Marine Biology Research Centre, affiliated to the Fisheries Research Institute under the Cabinet-level Council of Agriculture, after four years of research, it has developed breeding technology for five species of clownfish.

The centre is also working on a cultivation process for two other species and has conducted the first ever case in the world of breeding one of these species in captivity.

The next step will be to adapt the cultivation process to commercial-scale breeding, officials noted, adding that the centre is now blueprinting a prototype breeding facility with an annual output of some 300,000 ornamental fish in Taitung County next year.
