GUYANA - Key stakeholders in the fisheries sector are currently engaged in a consultation with international experts on low-cost fisheries management and cost recovery and the need to address the over-exploitation of some species has also emerged. The Government Information Agency (GINA) reported that the four-day activity, which opened on Tuesday at the Grand Coastal Inn, East Coast Demerara, is being facilitated by the Guyana Government and the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations (UN).
Minister of Agriculture Robert Persaud, in delivering the feature address at the opening ceremony, noted that government had acknowledged the FAO's position on the need for more activities to address the over-exploitation of fisheries resources, especially since fishing activities have put pressure on several species.
