Print This Page Freshwater Shrimp Harvested in Wise County
US - Fresh shrimp without taking a trip to the coast is now a reality at a farm in Wise County. For the next two weeks, farmer Doug Bryan will be draining ponds, harvesting shrimp and selling his product. He will scoop up shrimp and put them on ice. All customers will need is a cooler, he said.
Bryan and his wife Lee are among just a handful of people in Texas who operate fresh water shrimp farms. They said the benfit of freshwater shrimp over Gulf shrimp is that they are lower in cholesterol and have less iodine.
"It's a lot of work most of the year but once you put them in all you have to do is feed them in the evening. And they don't take a lot of work until you get ready to harvest," Lee Bryan said.
