Comesa countries plan to expand fish markets

KENYA - Small fishing communities are the main explorers of fisheries despite lack of infrastructure.

Member nations of Africa’s largest trade bloc have developed an action plan aimed at cashing in on the growing global demand for fish and fisheries products.

In a latest strategy to be co-ordinated by the World Fish Centre (WFC), members of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa) said they would improve their joint annual catch potential from the current 42 per cent through increased fish farming and exploitation of marine resources.

"It has been recognised that since sustainability is the focus of concern for the long- term fisheries development, both capture fisheries and aquaculture activities should be promoted vigorously for the region to meet the ever growing demand for fish and fisheries products," the market secretariat said.
