New feed additive protects Astaxanthin

CAROPHYLL® Stay-Pink, which is derived from natural compounds, improves the feed structure enabling greater protection of the Astaxanthin during manufacture and handling.

Astaxanthin is the carotenoid that produces the typical rich 'Pink' pigmentation in salmon flesh - a trait consumers prefer. However, it can be a difficult chemical to protect during feed processing.

DSM's new technology addresses this issue and close consultation with customers demonstrates it is a significant innovation. This carotenoid is deemed necessary to meet the market needs and consumer preferences.

CAROPHYLL® Stay-Pink is currently undergoing European registration as a sensory additive (EU Regulation 1831/2003) and feed manufacturers are expected to have access to the ingredient in the near future. Licensing procedures are also progressing in a number of other countries.
