Norway helps Viet Nam bring fisheries law to life
HA NOI - The Norwegian Government will provide $3.36 million US for the second phase of a project compiling Viet Nam's fisheries law, and other related legal documents. It will also help to put the legisation into practice.
An agreement to this effect was signed in Ha Noi on Tuesday by Fisheries Minister Ta Quang Ngoc and Norwegian Minister of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs Svein Ludvigsen.
The five-year project has a total capital of around 3.66 million USD, 300,000 USD of which are contributions by the Vietnamese Government. It is designed to improve the legal environment and increase the institutional capacity for effective management, thus contributing to the growth of Viet Nam's fisheries industry.
The first phase of the project was carried out from 1999 - 2004 with 1.4 million USD grant from Norway. It focused on creating a legal framework on fisheries with a view to making contributions to Viet Nam's sustainable development.
As a result, Viet Nam's Fisheries Law took effect as of July 1, 2004. All draft resolutions on guiding the implementation of the law have been presented to the Government for consideration.
Minister Ngoc affirmed that the project is one of major focuses of the two ministries' cooperation. Both sides will continue efforts in joint projects on aquaculture development, expanding markets and personnel training.
