Aquaculture for all

Minister Coughlan to take over Fisheries

IRELAND - The fishing industry in Donegal can look forward to having direct access to their Minister following confirmation that Agriculture Minister Mary Coughlan is to take responsibility for the fisheries sector.

As part of a reorganisation, her department is to be renamed the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

Minister Coughlan says she sees great potential for the further development of sea fisheries and aquaculture in the country, and overseeing that development will be a personal priority.

The new department will be responsible for sea fisheries, aquaculture, marine research, marine engineering and mainland fishing piers and harbours, as well as Bord Iascaigh Mhara, the Marine Institute and the Sea Fisheries Protection Agency.

Minister Coughlan added that having lived all her life in a coastal county, she understands the importance of these sectors and she along with Junior Minister John Browne will work as a strong team committed to giving the industry a new impetus for sustainable development, based on quality and added value.
