SCOTLAND - The Scottish Salmon Producers Organisation (SSPO)has been swift to reassure wild fishery interests that effective containment remains a priority. Sid Patten, chief executive of the Organisation says the industry deeply regrets all breaches of containment.
“The industry is making huge efforts to improve containment standards of fish, which, after all, represent our most valuable asset. Clearly, given some of the recent comments on this issue, it is a very emotive subject in some quarters. But predictions must be made on robust science, not supposition, he added.
He said that there appears to be consensus that the decline of wild fish is multi-factorial, with issues such as climate change having an impact. Salmon farmers and industry are eager to work with wild fish colleagues to determine the extent of all potential impacts. It's an area the SPPO feels is important to across the entire fish sector.
