Conservation group buys fish habitat

US - An Iowa conservation group has finished a nearly $7 million fundraising campaign - the biggest in its nearly three-decade history - to preserve key fish habitat at Spirit Lake.

The non-profit Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation bought the $6.67 million, 93-acre site at Anglers Bay, which includes Spirit Lake's last bulrush bed. It had been threatened by development.

Biologists called the habitat along the northeast shore critical for fish reproduction. They feared dock construction, boat traffic and runoff from proposed house construction would destroy the bulrushes, tall plants also known as reeds.
