Stating the above, Arsalan Qasemi, managing director of Iran Seafood Farm and Exports Cooperatives told MNA that based on a four-year plan, the sector aims to earn around $3 billion from farmed seafood exports. He added that this means earnings from shrimp exports could equal the revenues gained from exporting petrochemical products. “This is while investment in the petrochemicals sector is 100 percent to nil when compared to shrimp breeding,“ he noted.
According to him, export of farmed shrimp is banned to the European Union and a meeting will be held with Iran’s Trade Development Organization next month to find a way out of this situation.
He argued that to this end, it is necessary to coordinate among affiliated organizations in the sector. “Iranian embassies in Brussels and Dublin are making efforts to have the ban lifted. This means there should be some sort of coordination between exporters and Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Better results can be achieved through lobbying with Iran Trade Development Organization which is directly in charge of export issues.“
