Print This Page Senate bill would help restore oyster beds
US - A proposed $25 million restoration of Long Island Sound oyster beds inched along Tuesday after the Senate approved a final conference bill for $23 billion in water resource projects, said Sens. Chuck Schumer and Hillary Clinton. The House and Senate reached an agreement on the authorization bill in July, but both houses had to vote on the compromise, a Schumer spokesman said.
The government will give $18 million toward the oyster project, $5 million each to Babylon and Patchogue for sewer upgrades and $7 million to repair the storm-eroded Montauk Point Lighthouse. Local matches are required for the oyster beds and lighthouse, a Schumer spokesman said.
