Māori Development Manager For Aquaculture NZ

At the recent launch of Aquaculture New Zealand in Nelson, CEO Mike Burrell said that a new position to drive the implementation of the Maori development component of Aquaculture New Zealand’s ten-point plan, would be created. 

"Point six of the ten-point plan contained within our strategy is to promote Maori success in aquaculture. A successful sector strategy will ensure that Iwi, as beneficiaries of the settlement, are informed and active participants within aquaculture," said Mike Burrell.

Maori businesses are already a significant part of the NZ aquaculture industry and Mr Ellison's role will fulfil a fundamental step towards achieving the goals that are outlined in our strategy.

"I would like to acknowledge the support of Te Puni Kokiri in creating this important position and to Te Puni Kokiri in creating this important position," added Mr Burrell.

Riki Ellison comes to the industry from the Ministry for Environment where he was the Manager for Environment Stewardship. In this role he was responsible for a number of high profile projects, and prior to this was Acting Manager for the Marine and Treaty team. He has previously been a Director for the Ngai Tahu Development Corporation and a Policy Manager for Te Puni Kokiri. Riki holds a Bachelor of Law from the University of Otago and has practiced law. He is affiliated with Ngai Tahu, Te Atiawa, Ngati Mutunga, Ngati Tama, Ngati Toa, and Ngati Kahungunu.

"Riki brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this role and we look forward to welcoming him on board next month" said Mike Burrell.
