GUYANA - The National Aquaculture Association of Guyana (NAAG) says its chairman Beni Sankar exported about 1,000 lbs of tilapia to a New York market in August. The NAAG said the super Red and Nile species of tilapia were produced at Sankar's Von Better, West Coast Berbice farm and processed and packaged at Guyana Quality Seafoods (GQS) on the East Bank Demerara.
He has already sold several thousand pounds of the said species of tilapia, Pacu and Hassar on the local market. Sankar, who personally supervised the processing of the shipment, said that aquaculture has great potential for improving Guyana.
"As a rice farmer, I can tell you that aquaculture is a much more profitable venture, and once you follow the basic principles it is not difficult to produce an export quality produce," he added.
