UGANDA - The Minister of State for Fisheries, Fred Mukisa, has called for the formulation of strategies aimed at commercialising fish farming in the country.
He said this would address the fish shortage the country is facing due to increased demand in exports and local consumption, coupled with increased fishing pressure. “The country is looking at the fisheries sector as a major contributor to food security and income through both export and local revenue. It is alarming that fish is getting depleted due to poor fishing practices. There is need to stimulate commercial fish farming and sustainably exploit the fishery resource,” Mukisa added.
Mukisa was speaking at a workshop organised by the National Fisheries Resources Research Institute in Jinja last week.
