First regulations to be issued on fish farm structures

PHILIPPINES - Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Lito Atienza will sign an implementing rules and regulations (IRR) governing fish culture structures within the next two months which will cover Batangas province's world-famous Taal Lake.

DENR Undersecretary Demetrio Ignacio bared this as he said the IRR will likely be implemented beginning next year.

"This will be the country's first such IRR," said Atienza  in an interview at the 10th National Convention on Statistics, where several experts discussed statistical methodologies for generating data on the environment.

With this document as guide, Ignacio said, authorities will zone Taal Lake so they can allow fish culture structures only in areas designated for fish farming.

He noted existing structures built in zones not designated for such use will be demolished.

"We'll also allow to operate only the number of fish culture structures that Taal's eco-system can carry," he continued.

DENR plans to implement similar IRRs in other water bodies to protect these from degradation.
