INDIA - The price of fish crashed by about 30 to 40 per cent in all coastal towns of Nagapattinam district during the last week following poor demand. Most of the consumers avoid non-vegetarian food and undertake fast and observe ‘vritham’ in the current Tamil month of ‘Purattasi,’ considered to be very auspicious.
A cross-section of fishermen in Vedaranyam and Nagapattinam on Monday said they incurred heavy losses as they had to sell the fish at throwaway prices at many places. The situation would improve after a fortnight in the Tamil month of ‘Aipasi’ and they would get remunerative price.
