SRIKAKULAM - The Agriculture and Fisheries departments are jointly setting up a Tiger Prawn Research Centre (TRPC) at Moolapalem in Sompeta mandal at a cost of Rs 50 crore. The TRPC is to come up in a 100 acre site spread over Moolapalem, Golluru, Utpalam, Erramukkam, Batti Gallaru, Baruva and Vadapalem villages. The research work is likely to commence in December.
According to official sources, Moolapalem was identified as plenty of sweet water is available there thanks to the river Mahendratanaya and also saline water is available from the nearby Bay of Bengal.
The project is in its nascent stage and is aimed at inventing superior technologies to produce better quality tiger prawn which is in great demand abroad.
It is the first-of-its-kind project that involves overseas scientists as well.
A committee of the Agriculture and Fisheries Departments has recently inspected the project area. The district administration is making arrangements for its grounding.
A farmer, T Arjuna Rao, who will lose his five acres in Moolapalem, told ‘this website’s News Paper’ that he was happy that the TRPC was being set up there.
He hopes it would provide employment to the local farmers. However, he pointed out that the government should provide an adequate R&R package before going ahead with the project.
