Print This Page Shellfish demands increasing through local support
CANADA - The recent cartoon whereby shellfish expansions are opposed by a few very vocal waterfront owners is in some ways right on. There are a few upland owners who have been very effective in making it seem like Comox Valley residents oppose shellfish aquaculture.
That is, until you eat out in any of the Valley’s fine restaurants, where the residents who have learned how valuable eating locally is (100-Mile Diet!) as well as the health benefits of seafood are enjoying the quality, locally grown, organic shellfish to such an extent that our farmers have a better-than-ever local demand that they cannot even begin to fill.
It is a strange new world where those opposing farming are also the ones asking where they can buy the product.
Hopefully, wiser heads will prevail and we will be allowed to expand to meet these growing demands for our product.
